Behavioral Health Specialist

New Castle Correctional Facility in New Castle, IN

 

POSITION SUMMARY

The Behavioral Health Specialist is a member of the multi-disciplinary treatment team and provides clinically appropriate services under the clinical direction of a Psychologist. The Mental Health Professional will provide mental health screenings and assessments, clinical watches, treatment groups and individual sessions, as well as other clinically related activities.

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Participates in interdisciplinary treatment team meetings. 
  2. Assists as needed in discharge planning and referral process to appropriate resources when inmates are close to discharge.
  3. Quickly responds to and assess inmates in need of crisis intervention. Completes mental health crisis assessments in various inmate housing units.
  4. Consults with the multidisciplinary team on all crisis intervention cases for possible transfers to alternate levels of care.
  5. Provides group counseling as clinically appropriate, and agreed upon by the treatment team.
  6. Initiates, completes and maintains all of the treatment plans, including group therapy portions of treatment plans. Attends weekly staff meetings and follows all team/unit protocol.
  7. Completes bio-psychosocial assessments and other mental health reports and summaries as required.
  8. Participates in mandatory training activities as well as orientation of new staff.
  9. Adheres to universal precautions and other appropriate infection control practices.
  10. Adheres to regulations of medical chart 'sign outs' and returns all charts to Medical Records daily or via site specific Medical Records protocol.                                             
  11. Provides documentation in accordance with unit policies, procedures, and IDOC policies when recommended and/or indicated.
  12. Contributes to unit development and implementation of written and/or verbally directed clinical procedures.
  13. Participates in mandatory as well as elective educational activities as well as orientation of new staff, and inmate orientation.
  14. Adheres to universal precautions and other appropriate infection control practices.
  15. Adheres to safety and security policies, and participates in disaster drills.
  16. Follows security regulations and policies, with consideration of clinical factors.
  17. Completes case management responsibilities as required.
  18. Appropriately recommends/offers input to multi-disciplinary team for transfers to alternate levels of care, and/or grade changes when requested.
  19. Participates in all mental health watches and log entries as directed.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS

Standard medical setting in a correctional facility, which includes daily interfacing with inmates, correctional staff, and health care personnel.

Temperature extremes may be encountered while moving throughout the facility outdoors and indoors in buildings without air conditioning.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

Licensing:

Licensed or license-eligible in the State of Indiana in accordance with Indiana Code 25-23.6-8.5 Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC) requirements, or as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) with license awarded by the Indiana Professional Licensing Agency

Certification:

CPR

Experience:

At least one (1) year prior clinical experience working with the forensics client; have familiarity with relevant research literature, clinical assessments, procedures and methods, have ability to assess treatment goals and write goal-directed, individualized treatment plans; have ability to monitor and document individual behavior patterns and modify treatment plans; and be familiar with diagnostic nomenclature outlined in the most recent Diagnostic and Statistical Manual preferred.

Education:

Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology, Counseling, or other related mental health field required. Master’s degree in Psychology, Social Work, or Counseling preferred.
