The Behavioral Health Specialist is a member of the multi-disciplinary treatment team and provides clinically appropriate services under the clinical direction of a Psychologist.


  1. Participates in interdisciplinary treatment team meetings.
  2. Assists as needed in discharge planning and referral process to appropriate resources when inmates are close to discharge.
  3. Provides group psychological education as clinically appropriate, and agreed upon by the treatment team.
  4. Attends weekly staff meetings and follows all team/unit protocol.
  5. Provides documentation in accordance with unit policies, procedures, and IDOC policies when recommended and/or indicated.
  6. Contributes to unit development and implementation of written and/or verbally directed clinical procedures.
  7. Participates in mandatory as well as elective educational activities as well as orientation of new staff, and inmate orientation.
  8. Adheres to universal precautions and other appropriate infection control practices.
  9. Adheres to safety and security policies, and participates in disaster drills.
  10. Follows security regulations and policies, with consideration of clinical factors.
  11. Appropriately recommends/offers input to multi-disciplinary

Standard medical setting within a correctional facility, which includes daily interfacing with inmate patients, correctional staff, and health care personnel. Temperature extremes may be encountered while moving throughout the facility outdoors and indoors in buildings without air conditioning.


TRAVEL: Minimal.


CERTIFICATION: Current CPR certification.

EDUCATION: Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology, Counseling, or other related mental health field required.

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE: At least one (1) year prior clinical experience working with the forensics client; have familiarity with relevant research.
