POSITION SUMMARY

Under direct supervision of the Dentist, a DentalAssistantperforms non-professional work assisting the Dentist during examination and treatment of patients and in the routine handling of instruments and supplies.

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Maintains supplies, materials and records of treatment.
  2. Sets up instruments, equipment and supplies as directed by the Dentist or Dental Hygienist.
  3. Prepares the patient for treatment.
  4. Helps patients feel comfortable before, during and after dental treatment.
  5. Ensures proper clean up, packaging and sterilizing of instruments.
  6. Assist in instruction of patients in proper dental hygiene
  7. Assists in screenings for dental emergencies and sick call.
  8. Provides chair-side assistance by keeping operating field clear, passing instruments and suctioning.
  9. Scrubs and sterilizes instruments.
  10. Mixes restorative materials.
  11. Assists in taking intra-oral x-rays in accordance with proper radiological hygiene.
  12. Develops and mounts x-ray films.
  13. Performs intra-oral tasks as defined by law.
  14. Maintains x-ray unit, processor, autoclave and dental unit according to specifications.
  15. Inventories supplies and equipment to maintain adequate levels.
  16. Orders supplies and equipment as needed.
  17. Ensures there is sufficient number of trays set up for the day’s patients, pulpotomy, caries control, amalgam and Perio/scaling.
  18. Maintains cleanliness and sanitation of dental clinic.
  19. Responsible for dental office security to include instrument, drug and needle counts.  Maintains constant alertness to conditions that might endanger the security of the institution, personnel and inmates. 
  20. Maintains confidentiality of inmate records.
  21. Accepts constructive criticism in stressful situations.
  22. Makes suggestions for improving work conditions to the Dentist.

Administrative responsibilities:

  • Maintains dental charts.
  • Records dental findings.
  • Schedules patients for dental appointments.
  • Prepares patient’s schedule for escort officer.
  • Maintains all dental logs.
  • Inputs information into appropriate computer record

Once each week:

  • Cleans developer.
  • Cleans autoclave.

Once each month:

  • Scrubs all drains with soap and water.
  • Cleans examination lights, dental unit, x-ray unit film processor.
  • Changes wet tank chemicals.
  • Submits report to the Health ServicesAdministratorand Regional Dental Director

Conforms to Wexford Health and facility regulations as appropriate, to include, but not be limited to:

  • Dress Code
  • Schedule/time sheet
  • Safety and security regulations
  • Procedure for PTO  and education seminars

The duties and responsibilities outlined herein are for payroll purposes only; employees may be assigned other duties as required.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS

Dental clinic setting within the correctional facility, which includes daily interfacing with inmates, correctional staff, and health care personnel.  Temperature extremes may be encountered while moving throughout the facility outdoors and indoors in buildings without air conditioning.

LICENSING: None

CERTIFICATION:

  • Expanded Functions OR Certified Dental Assistant (CDA) Certification
  • Dental Radiology Certification (if not included in above certification)
  • Current CPR Certification

EDUCATION: High School graduate or GED certificate

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE: Experience working in a dental setting and/or correctional health care preferred.
