POSITION SUMMARY

The Infection Control Coordinator plans, develops, directs, implements and evaluates infection prevention within a correctional facility.  This position serves to instruct staff in proper infection control procedure, identify infection trends, and investigates infection control problems.  In addition, the ICC generates reports containing data used to analyze trends.

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Coordinate infection control program.
  2. Track and ensure appropriate isolation/negative pressure room maintenance.
  3. Activate surveillance during peak times of infectious diseases or during an outbreak.  Track rates and types of infection through surveillance systems and report findings to the Medical Director, Statewide Infection Control Director, Director of Nursing, and Health Services Administrator.
  4. Evaluate risk of patients, employees, and custody staff after exposure to an infectious disease.  
  5. Complete and maintain the annual risk assessment.
  6. The Infection Control Nurse will review entire exposure process and assure appropriate documentation. 
  7. Develop innovative teaching methods and plans for teaching the concept of universal precautions.  Maintain documentation on infectious disease trainings.
  8. Coordinate a series of educational classes to meet the infection control needs of a given population.
  9. Acts on recognized trends of disease to establish control programs.
  10. Provide fit testing for employees.
  11. Perform TB Testing and annual vaccination, as assigned.
  12. Participate in committee discussion and offers suggestions and inventions as necessary.
  13. Develops policies and procedures using the literature and the national guidelines.
  14. Communicate with staff about infection control problems, provides literature to support advice and action problems to establish protocols.
  15. Use medical literature to establish protocols for appropriate culturing of environment and patient.
  16. Participate in environmental rounds, completing and maintaining environmental lists and cognizes risks and hazards that may be described in the literature but not listed on a checklist or in a policy.
  17. Review literature and use key information to develop data collection form; refines data collection process as the process unfolds; and presents data for trending analysis with proposed interpretation.
  18. Analyze nosocomial infection surveillance data, performs statistical analysis, and analyze information during discussions.
  19. Develop interventions for isolation in unique situations.
  20. Provide consultation while triage of call and takes problem solving action.
  21. Initiate new programs based on microbiology report findings.
  22. Document and identify problems, initiate memos, fliers, and educational material.
  23. Discuss problems involving outside agencies with administration and recommend plans to resolve.
  24. Participate in CQI/Infection Control committees and establish action plans, as needed
  25. Coordinate departmental projects.
  26. Adhere to internal controls established for department.

ADDITIONAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Be proficient in CPR and recognize when to implement.  Receive recertification training annually.
  • Comply with Correctional Facility’s Policies and Procedures.
  • Maintains confidentiality of inmate records.
  • Make suggestions for improving work conditions, as appropriate.
  • Ensures compliance with all infection control activities required by the RFP/Contract.
  • Collaborate with co-workers and coordinate internal projects, as directed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS

Standard medical setting within a correctional facility, which includes daily interfacing with inmate patients, correctional staff, and health care personnel. Temperature extremes may be encountered while moving throughout the facility outdoors and indoors in buildings without air conditioning.


 

TRAVEL: Minimal travel required

LICENSING: Maryland Registered Nurse required

CERTIFICATION: Current CPR Certification or ACLS

EDUCATION: Graduate from an accredited School of Nursing

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:

  • Minimum of one (1) year of clinical experience preferred
  • Knowledge of microbiology, epidemiology, and antibiotic use, a plus
  • Strong technical experience (Microsoft word, excel, etc.)
  • Correctional Experience, a plus

OTHER PREFERRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Possess cognitive skills necessary to understanding terminology, medical records and instructions.
  • Possess skills in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with patients, staff and custody.
  • Possess ability to organize and carry out work assignments with minimal supervision and to prioritize work assignments and departmental responsibilities.
  • Strong researcher in infection prevention and control.
  • Demonstrated experience maintaining multiple deadlines. 
  • Ability to competently manage multiple priorities simultaneously.
  • Ability to work in a stressful environment.
  • Respect and maintain confidentiality.
