POSITION SUMMARY

The Medical Assistant is responsible for performing select non-complex nursing interventions safely, accurately, and according to standard procedure.  Medical Assistants work under direct and indirect supervision of an RN or LPN. 

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

Duties and responsibilities will vary with specific assignments.

  1. Identify basic signs and symptoms of deviations from normal health status.  Provide this information to the nurse and/or physician.
  2. Collect basic subjective and objective date from observations and interviews.  Provide this information to the nurse and/or physician.
  3. Perform intake screening on sick call clients.
  4. Provide appropriate first aid and CPR.  Report findings to the nurse and/or physician.
  5. Assist the physician or nurse with procedures and treatments.
  6. Provide medications by the following routes:  oral, inhalation, topical and instillation into the eyes, ears and nose.
  7. Keep and maintain accurate medication administration records.
  8. Schedule physician, dentist, and nurse sick call appointments.
  9. Clean, package and sterilize instruments.
  10. Fax prescription orders to the pharmacy for new orders and refills.
  11. Receive, inspect and inventory medication orders for accuracy.
  12. Maintain needle, syringe and instrument inventory and record of receipt and issuance.
  13. Inventory and restock first aid kits, supply rooms, etc.
  14. Check expiration dates on medications and supplies.
  15. Perform other duties as assigned.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS

Clinical setting within a correctional facility.

 


Job Requirements:

 

TRAVEL: Minimal travel required.

LICENSING: Ability to meet the registration requirements for Medical Assistant.

CERTIFICATION: Current CPR certification

EDUCATION: Completion of an assistive health care personnel training/educational program including but not limited to medical assistant, nurse aide, pharmacy technician.

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:

  • One (1) year experience in a position with equivalent responsibilities. 
  • Able to meet competency requirements
