POSITION SUMMARY

The Patient Care Technicianis responsible for assisting in the delivery of patient care under the supervision on a licensed medical professional. The Patient Care Technicianhelps the nurse meet the needs of the patient while adhering to professional standards, county policies, organizational policies and procedures, federal, state and local requirements and NCCHC standards. 

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Under the guidanceof a licensed nurse, performs non-professional nursing care duties in the assessment of the physical, psychological and social dimensions of patients in the Health Care Unit and, as necessary,in the Housing Units.
  2. Assists in implementing individual treatment programs in the Health Care Unit and, as necessary, in the housing unit.
  3. Implements clinical and technical aspects of care in accordance with established policies and procedures.
  4. Documents nursing encounters, patient response and communicates information to supervisory personnel and physicians.
  5. Documents intake information as reported by patient.
  6. Documents actions bycompleting forms, reports, logs and records.
  7. Respects dignity and confidentiality of patients.
  8. Takes vital signs (temperature, pulse, respiration and blood pressure).
  9. Provides adjunct care by monitoring blood glucose, phlebotomy, non-sterile dressings, surgical preps, ice packs, heat treatments, sitz and therapeutic baths; applying restraints.
  10. Provides for comfort and safety of patients.
  11. Assists with activities of daily living with special attention to therapeutic significance.
  12. Assists in maintaining working and living areas and supplies in good order.
  13. Assists with orientation of new employees.
  14. Assists physician as assigned.
  15. Supervises inmates in the maintenance, cleanliness and sanitation of the environment.
  16. Other duties as required and/or assigned.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS

Standard medical setting within a correctional facility, which includes daily interfacing with offenders/patients, correctional staff, and health care personnel.  Temperature extremes may be encountered while moving throughout the facility outdoors and indoors in buildings without air conditioning.

CERTIFICATION:

  • Current CPR certification
  • Current certification as a Nursing Assistant

EDUCATION: Graduate of accredited Certified Nurse Aide, Certified Medical Assistant or Emergency Medical Technician training program

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE: One (1) year clinical experience
