Position
The Optometrist examines eyes and visual system; administers sight tests; diagnoses problems or impairments, manages, and treats visual problems, conditions and diseases of the human eye and visual system. Prescribes and fits corrective glasses or contact lenses. To do this involves the use of specialist equipment. The incumbent also recommends other treatments or visual aids where appropriate or refers cases to medical practitioners as necessary. May prescribe therapeutic drugs to treat specific eye conditions.
Duties
- Examines the eyes of patients of various ages to detect signs of injury, disease, abnormality and defects in vision
- Maintains the confidentiality of all correspondence and files
- Checks for signs and symptoms of general health conditions (diabetes, for example};
- Communicates with patients to get detailed case histories
- Using specialist electronic equipment for diagnosis and testing
- Writes prescriptions for glasses, contact lenses and other optical appliances
- Fits and checks prescribed lenses in order to correct vision defects
- Offers advice and reassurance about matters related to vision
- Offers help and advice for patients choosing frames and lenses

Must be able to clearly communicate orally and via written and typed correspondence and notes using various forms, records, charts, and electronic media.
