POSITION SUMMARY

The Assistant Director of Nursing (ADON) works with the Director of Nursing in structuring comprehensive planning and implementing the Nursing Services Program that guides the delivery of a quality health care program.  The Assistant Director of Nursing must work effectively with patients, patient families, medical and nursing staff, security staff at all levels, and the administrative and support staff.

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

1.     Demonstrates skill and expertise in provision of all steps of the nursing process.
2.      Acts as resource for other nurses in their delivery of patient care.
3.     Maintain working knowledge of pharmacology including drug reaction/overdose and serves as a resource for other nurses.
4.     Responds to emergencies and provides direction to other nurses and security as needed. Respond to inmate, staff or visitor medical emergencies and provide appropriate first aid or triage.
5.     Assists with providing, coordinating and monitoring orientation, in-services and continuing education within Nursing Services.  Serves as Preceptor for newly hired nursing personnel.
6.     Participates in recruitment/retention efforts for Nursing Services.
7.      Assists in budgetary activities such as monitoring personnel and efficient use of supplies
8.     Participates in the Utilization Review Committee, Quality Assurance Committee and Infection Control Committee.
9.     Conduct regular meetings with nursing staff and ensure the practice of nursing is consistent with current standards.
10.  Assists/ participates in necessary “on call” for nursing emergencies or nursing staff needs.
11.  Assists in the development and maintenance of nursing schedule as directed by Regional Manager.
12.  Serve as representative for, and/or liaison between, nursing services and other health care providers, as well as Health Services Administrator, and coordinate patient care with other departments.
13.  Acts as a resource to the nursing staff in patient care and f ensures that established protocols are followed.
14.  Delegates tasks as appropriate, within the employees scope of practice
15.  Provides feedback to Regional Manager that assists in evaluation of employees’ performance to ensure and maintain quality care.
16.  Assists the Director of Nursing with collection of nursing personnel’s licensure/certifications and helps ensure that all staff has current credentials.
17.  Investigates all discrepancies in sharps and tool counts, forwards written findings to the Director of Nursing.
18.  Reviews/ investigates medication errors and forward written findings to the Director of Nursing.
19.  Assists with investigating and responding to applicable grievances.
20.  Supervises all assigned staff nurses and paraprofessional nursing personnel.
21.  Provides functional direction and guidance to nursing staff through on-the-job training and  ensures appropriate and quality orientation for all newly hired staff.
22.  Participates in planning, priority setting and the development of policies and procedures for health care activities that are in compliance with contractual requirements, Department of Human Resources and CARF standards.
23.  Coordinates and monitors orientation, in-services and continuing education within the Division of Nursing Services.  Plans, develops and conducts in-service training classes for professional and/or paraprofessional patient care personnel
24.  Notifies the Wexford Health Staffing Department of vacant or upcoming vacant positions in a timely manner and actively assists the Staffing Department in the filling of vacant positions.
25.  Conducts the selection and evaluation of all nursing personnel and assists administrative staff in personnel functions relating to nursing staff.
26.  Notifies Regional Manager of staffing variances.
27.  Complies with and enforces Wexford Health/Facility policies and procedures and ensures subordinate compliance.
28.  Is familiar with all aspects of the Wexford Health Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) and operates consistent with the language as interpreted by Wexford Health Administration.
29.  Ensures the existence of an Infection Control Program and supervises the activities of the program as well as ongoing monitoring of the program in compliance with Company/Facility policies and procedures and community standards.
30.  Supports and participates in evaluation designed to improve work conditions and patient care.  Evaluates employee performance consistent with policies and timelines.
31.  Prepares and submits monthly reports as requested by the Regional Manager.
32.  Conducts regular meetings with staff as required per Company/Facility policies to maintain optimal levels of communication within the Health Care Unit.
33.  Acts as administrator on call for nursing emergencies or nursing staff needs.
34.  Develops and maintains appropriate staffing schedule to ensure adequate nursing coverage for all shifts in accordance with contract terms of nursing coverage and the Wexford Health CBA.  Responsible for making changes in time schedules, and granting special requests for time off, if appropriate.
35.  Keeps abreast and follows through on incidents occurring on all shifts.
36.  Is available for conferences on all shifts.
37.  Counsels nursing personnel in following established protocols.
38.  Ensures all communicable diseases are reported to the local/state health authorities as appropriate or required.
39.  Reviews all mediation errors, investigates, reconciles and applies appropriate corrective action if indicated.
40.  Receives direction from DHS personnel as appropriate, including but not limited to Program Director, Director of Nursing.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS

Standard medical setting within a correctional facility, which includes daily interfacing with offenders/patients, correctional staff, and health care personnel.  Temperature extremes may be encountered while moving throughout the facility outdoors and indoors in buildings without air conditioning.

Job Requirements:

The following requirements list the minimum to qualify.  An equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted.

TRAVEL: Minimal travel throughout region is required.

LICENSING: Current Illinois Registered Nursing License  

CERTIFICATION: Current CPR certification.

EDUCATION: Graduate of an accredited nursing school; BSN, preferred

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:

  • Minimum two to three (2-3) years of experience in a supervisory nursing role, preferred
  • Minimum of two (2) years of administrative and/or correctional nursing experience preferred
  • Management experience, a plus

OTHER PREFERRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • General math and analytical skills, and planning, administrative and organizational skills essential. 
  • Demonstrated experience meeting multiple deadlines.  Must ensure documents are ready for review well in advance of any deadline.
  • Ability to competently manage multiple priorities simultaneously.
  • Ability to work in a stressful environment.
  • Must be able assist staff with various policies, administrative and organizational projects. “Team-player” as this position requires daily coordination with other coworkers.
