SCHEDULE:         Full-Time / Day Shift / 36 hours per week
FACILITY:             Orleans Justice Center
LOCATION:          New Orleans, LA

POSITION SUMMARY
Under the direct supervision of the Director of Nursing and administrative supervision from the Health Services Administrator, the CNA/Observer will assist nursing staff with daily operations.  Utilizes electronic medical record system as applicable throughout the scope of duties and responsibilities.

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
The CNA/Observer will assist nursing staff in direct patient care activities as stated below and as assigned.

1.    Assists inmates with activities of daily living such as feeding, bathing, bed making, shaving, dressing and other related tasks.
2.    Assists in checking vital signs, height and weight as assigned; collects and maintains records of fluid intake and output; reports on the condition of inmates.
3.    Follows established inflection control practices and emergency protocols.
4.    Assists inmates in wheel chairs, on stretchers and ambulating.
5.    Promotes and encourages patient hydration and elimination.
6.    Assists inmates with ambulation, turning and repositioning, and range of motion activities.
7.    Cleanse bedside units, workrooms and equipment; assists nursing staff with washing and sterilizing equipment.
8.    Prepares and maintains written reports and records as assigned.
9.    Assists with medications ordinarily self-administered when specifically ordered by a physician.
10.    Responds to call lights promptly and courteously.
11.    Receives formal and on the job training in the theory and techniques of direct care support.
12.    Receives close supervision; work is reviewed through inspections and observations.
13.    Ensures that suicide watch and observation protocols and program activities are carried out in accordance with applicable licensure, certification and accreditation standards.
14.    Works with custody staff to ensure suicide blankets, mattresses, and smocks are utilized as directed in the suicide watch plan.
15.    Encourages and monitors nutrition and hydration of the inmate patient including suicide packaged meals. Documents and reports intake.
16.    Maintains and organizes suicide watch therapeutic activity supplies.
17.    Immediately notifies custody staff and/or approved clinical staff if there is a need to leave the observation post to ensure coverage as indicated in the suicide watch plan.

JOB REQUIREMENTS
The following requirements list the minimum to qualify.  An equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted.
LICENSING: None Required
CERTIFICATION: Nursing Assistant certificate.  Current CPR certification. 
EDUCATION: Completion of a certification program from an accredited Certified Nursing Assistant program approved by the Louisiana Department of Health.
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE: 0-2 years. Prior experience with use of electronic medical record system.
