POSITION SUMMARY
Serves as the behavioral health authority for the facility. Responsible for the delivery of contracted services, personnel, and coordination of psychiatric/behavioral health services and programs. Serves as the liaison between Wexford Health and the correctional system.
DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Supports, and provides direction for, the psychiatric and behavioral health care delivery system and coordinates with the other functions within the institution.
2. Ensures compliance with ACA/CMA standards and state and correctional system regulations policies and procedures. Upon site visits, meets with Health Service Administrator (HSA) and facility administration to assure open communication.
3. Develops facility-wide operational plans and policies.
4. Monitors the activities of the behavioral health staff. Provides direction and monitors staff to ensure compliance with policies and procedures, under the direct supervision of the Health Services Administrator.
5. Participates in the recruitment and selection of behavioral health personnel as needed. May be required to provide clinical supervision to psychiatrists, psychiatric students/ residents, CRNP’s, etc. as appropriate.
6. Meets regularly with the site behavioral health staff to ensure appropriate provision of services.
7. Coordinates training for behavioral health and institutional staff on mental health issues as requested.
8. Provides consultation services to institutional staff for mental health issues as requested.
9. Assures that all mental health evaluations are completed and submitted in a timely manner.
10. Develops and maintains a system to provide 24-hour mental health consultation services to institutional staff in situations requiring immediate crisis intervention.
11. Attends mandatory and optional in-service training; participates in and conducts in-service programs; assists in orientation of new staff.
12. Provides direct assistance to the HSA in administration, planning, management and delivery of behavioral health services at the facility level.
13. Contributes to behavioral health program development and evaluation.
14. Provides documentation in accordance with unit policies and procedures.
15. Monitors and insures the appropriate utilization of psychotropic medications.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
The following requirements list the minimum to qualify. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted.
LICENSURE: Current Louisiana Medical license required
Current Louisiana Controlled Substance license required
Current DEA license
CERTIFICATION: Board Certification, American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology; CPR certification required
EDUCATION: Medical degree with psychiatry residency required.
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE: 3 years’ experience in an institutional healthcare setting preferred; correctional healthcare experience preferred. Knowledge and skills to access diagnose and treat medical and psychiatric disorders; and have knowledge and experience with the special needs and behavior of individuals in forensic and correctional settings.
