POSITION SUMMARY
Under the direct supervision of the Medical Director, the incumbent is responsible for delivery of patient care through the nursing processes of screening, assessment, medication delivery, treatment planning, implementation, evaluation and patient education.  Also directs and guides patient teaching activities and ancillary personnel, while maintaining standards of professional nursing.  Utilizes electronic medical record system as applicable throughout the scope of duties and responsibilities.

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provides leadership to RNs, LPNs, CNAs and other nursing paraprofessionals as related to psychiatric aspects of patient care.
  • Assesses physical, psychological and psychosocial dimensions of patients within the Health Care Unit and, as necessary, in the housing units.
  • Reviews and monitors offenders; disperses or administers medications as necessary and maintain patient charts and medical records.
  • Provides therapeutic intervention and crisis care to patients who are in need of mental health services.
  • Functions as a group or individual therapist and manage caseload.
  • Directs medical, educational and training services to offenders.
  • Represents the facility in court, as requested.
  • Responds to emergencies involving medical and psychiatric concerns.
  • Completes diagnostic and evaluative procedures, and presents recommendations and measures of progress in multi-disciplinary staffing.
  • Maintains working knowledge of pharmacology including drug reaction/overdose; therapeutic diets and nutrition; and social and behavioral sciences, particularly as applied to the correctional setting.
  • Administers medications including IV therapy and IM injections and all other approved routes of administration per the order of the physicians/mid-level providers.
  • Recommends improved procedures, equipment and supplies to the Health Services Administrator or Director of Nursing.
  • Presents/participates in in-service education sessions.
  • Provides a written assessment/health history of patient on admission, during confinement and on discharge as requested.
  • Summarizes assessment data, and makes triage decision which is documented and communicated to other patient care providers.
  • Utilizes referral process to appropriate health care providers as necessary.
  • Intervenes with proper techniques, procedures and safety precautions utilizing aseptic technique and infection control to meet individual needs of patients.
  • Communicates information to ancillary departments using established referral process.
  • Documents nursing encounters utilizing the Problem Oriented Medical Records format of charting as required by the facility.
  • Develops and maintains professional relationships with patients, visitors, and medical and correctional personnel.  Promotes good working relationships among staff and between other disciplines and departments.

 
JOB REQUIREMENTS
The following requirements list the minimum to qualify. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted.
LICENSURE:  Current, unrestricted Louisiana Registered Nursing License
CERTIFICATION: Current CPR certification
EDUCATION: Graduate from an accredited school of Nursing. Associate’s Degree required; Bachelors’ Degree preferred.
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE: Minimum one (1) year of clinical experience; correctional nursing experience a plus
