POSITION SUMMARY
The Psychiatric Physician Assistant/Nurse Practitioner provides a broad range of services including the assessment, identification and treatment of mental health concerns, health education to patients, and illness coping mechanisms. The Psychiatric PA/NP also acts as a consultant to the mental health staff. The incumbent is responsible for delivery of patient care through the nursing process of assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation; directs and guides ancillary personnel, while maintaining standards of professional nursing.
DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
- Assesses patient/inmate’s mental health status and assists the Site Medical Director with patient health management as required.
- Supports and provides direction for the psychiatric and behavioral health care delivery system and coordinates with the other functions with the facility.
- Orders appropriate diagnostic tests and procedures to effectively diagnose and treat the patient’s health condition.
- Dispenses, prescribes and administers medications as specified in the drug formulary protocol for PA/NPs and as approved by the appropriate regulatory boards. Monitors and ensures the appropriate utilization of psychotropic medications.
- Initiates referrals to other members of the health care team, monitors the schedule of patients for special tests.
- Provides leadership to Mental Health Professionals, RNs and LPNs and other nursing paraprofessionals in patient care as related to mental health aspects of patient care.
- Counsels inmate-patients on preventative care, mental health problems, and use of prescribed treatment.
- Establishes individualized treatment plans and ensures the continuity of care for inmates requiring on-going mental health care services.
- Utilizes the SOAP charting format to document pertinent inmate information in chronological order in the health record.
- Prepares patients for and performs or assists in special treatments, procedures and examinations.
- Makes infirmary rounds, housing rounds and staffs the screening areas as requested.
- Performs historical and physical examinations.
- Maintains the confidentiality of inmate records.
- Makes suggestions for improving work conditions to the Medical Director or Health Services Administrator.
- Assists with the orientation of new employees as requested or assigned.
- Participates in the training of Wexford/facility personnel on mental health as required per NCCHC and ACA standards, as applicable.
- Respects dignity and confidentiality of patients.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
The following requirements list the minimum to qualify. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted.
LICENSURE: Current, unrestricted Louisiana Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant license required. Current Louisiana Controlled Substance license. Current DEA license.
CERTIFICATION: Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner or Psychiatric Physician Assistant certification required. Current CPR Certification.
EDUCATION: Graduate of college/university Advanced Practice Nurse or Physician Assistant program
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE: Minimum two (2) years of clinical experience; correctional healthcare experience a plus
