POSITION SUMMARY
The Certified Medication Technician assists in performing routine duties to include medication administration, inventory control and storage of pharmaceutical items. Certified Medication Technicians work under the direct supervision of the Director of Nursing and/or, depending on scope of practice, receives clinical guidance from a Registered Nurse or Licensed Practical Nurse..

 

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Prepares and administers prescribed medications to patients under the supervision of a licensed Registered Nurse, and in compliance with all facility policies and procedures and Pharmacy Board rules and regulations governing medication administration and documentation.  Recognizes and adheres to the six (6) rights of medication administration.
  2. Adheres to all facility policies and procedures and Pharmacy Board rules and regulation regarding the administration and documentation of narcotic medications.
  3. Documents administration of medication on the Medication Administration Record (MAR).
  4. Documents medications not administered on the MAR and the reason for not being administered.
  5. Adheres to proper infection control techniques during the medication administration process, including the incorporation of universal precautions when indicated.
  6. Participates in data collection, medication audits, and other performance improvement activities related to medication administration.
  7. Following policy and utilizing appropriate documents, flow sheets and forms, documents all health-related encounters for patients.
  8. Reports any adverse patient medication reactions immediately to a supervisor.
  9. Ensures the medication cart remains clean and orderly.
  10. Reorders and replaces medications and medication administration supplies, as needed, in order to perform routine job responsibilities. Checks expiration dates on medications and supplies.
  11. Ensures the confidentiality and rights of patients, the confidentiality of the health systems and department documents, and adhering to HIPAA Regulations.
  12. Assists other healthcare staff as needed in the medical unit within the scope of practice.
  13. Identifies basic signs and symptoms of deviations from normal health status. Provides this information to the nurse and/or physician.
  14. Works in conjunction with nurses to maintain daily duties required to run the medical unit in an organized fashion.
  15. Provides appropriate first aid and CPR. Reports findings to the nurse and/or physician.
  16. Provides patient teaching as instructed.
  17. Performs clerical duties such as answering the phone, filing documents in patient record.

 
JOB REQUIREMENTS
The following requirements list the minimum to qualify.  An equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted.

LICENSING: None required
CERTIFICATION: Certified as a Medication Technician (Aide); current CPR Certification
EDUCATION: High School diploma or GED equivalent required
EXPERIENCE: One (1) year experience in a medical environment preferred
