POSITION SUMMARY

Under the direct supervision of the Mental Health Director of Nursing, responsible for delivery of mental health and somatic patient care to mentally ill offenders through the nursing process of assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation. Also directs and guides patient teaching activities and ancillary personnel, while maintaining standards of professional nursing. Utilizes electronic medical record system as applicable throughout the scope of duties and responsibilities.

 

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

The Registered Nurse – Mental Health shall provide a broad range of services to the mentally ill offender population including nursing screenings and assessments, medication delivery, treatment planning within a multi-disciplinary treatment team, and patient education.

  1. Provides leadership to RNs, LPNs, CNAs and other nursing paraprofessionals in patient care as related to psychiatric aspects of patient care.
  2. Reviews and monitors all offenders receiving psychotropic and somatic medications, as assigned and maintains charts and records.
  3. Disperses or administers psychotropic and somatic medications as necessary, and keeps proper charts and records.
  4. Provides therapeutic intervention and crisis care to patients who are in need of mental health and medical services.
  5. Provides health and medication education in both a group and individual setting.
  6. Keeps and maintains records related to casework, medical and mental health nursing services.
  7. Works in concert with unit staff to provide professional mental health and medical casework services.
  8. Directs medical, educational and training services to offenders.
  9. Represents the correctional center in court as requested.
  10. Respond to emergencies involving medical and psychiatric issues.
  11. Completes assessments and evaluative procedures and presents recommendations and measures of progress in multi-disciplinary staffing.
  12. Maintains working knowledge of pharmacology including drug reaction/overdose for both psychotropic and somatic medications; therapeutic diets and nutrition; and social and behavioral sciences, particularly as applied to the correctional setting.
  13. Administers medications including IV therapy and IM injections and all other approved routes of administration per the order of the psychiatrist or physicians/mid level providers.
  14. Recommends improved procedures, equipment and supplies to immediate supervisor or Regional Manager.
  15. Notify supervisor and complete written reports for any medical or security incidents.
  16. Presents/participates in in-service education sessions.
  17. Responds to offender, staff or visitor medical emergencies and provides appropriate first aid, including CPR, or triage as needed or requested.
  18. Assesses physical, psychological and psychosocial dimensions of patients within the Health Care Unit and, as necessary, in the housing units.
  19. Applies knowledge of illnesses, injuries and diseases using available resources in obtaining a health history and in the assessment process.
  20. Provides a written assessment of patient on admission, during confinement and on discharge as requested.
  21. Summarizes assessment data, and makes triage decision which is documented and communicated to other patient care providers.
  22. Utilizes referral process to appropriate health care providers as necessary.
  23. Applies knowledge and utilizes available resources in planning care and patient teaching.
  24. Consults as necessary with other nurses, psychiatrists, physician assistants, physicians, correctional officers, etc.
  25. Plans and implements an Individual Treatment Program in the Health Care Unit and, as necessary, in the housing units.
  26. Implements clinical and technical aspects of care in accordance with established policies and procedures.
  27. Intervenes with proper techniques, procedures and safety precautions utilizing aseptic technique and infection control to meet individual needs of patients..
  28. Communicates information to ancillary departments using established referral process.
  29. Implements treatment plans as ordered by a physician or psychiatrist.
  30. Documents nursing encounters utilizing the Problem Oriented Medical Records format of charting or the Electronic Medical Record, as required by the facility.
  31. Communicates information to other nursing staff, Psychiatrists, Health Care Unit physicians, physician assistants, Health Care Unit supervisory personnel, and DOC correctional officers and departments.
  32. Assess personal and learning development needs.
  33. Plans and implements programs to meet identified needs through in-service attendance and other formal and informal means.
  34. Demonstrates knowledge of and performs nursing policies and procedures.
  35. Supports the philosophy, objectives and goals of the mental health program.
  36. Accepts staffing assignments, and performs other related duties as required or assigned by immediate supervisor. Performs within the normal limits of the State Nurse Practice Act, Code of Ethics for Nurses, WHS policies and procedures as applicable and facility policy/procedures and standards.
  37. Promotes quality assurance standards by participating in quality chart audits and other QA activities as requested.
  38. Develops and maintains professional relationships with patients, visitors, and medical and correctional personnel. Promote good working relationships among staff and between other disciplines and departments.
  39. Supervises and strives for excellence in patient care by challenging and, as necessary, correcting errors of peers to ensure the safety and well-being of the patient.
  40. Identifies existing and potential problems and take effective action.
  41. Assumes individual accountability for own conduct and maintenance of professional appearance.
  42. Maintains the confidentiality of offender records.
  43. Approaches change in a positive manner.
  44. Makes suggestions for improving work conditions to the designated site manager.
  45. Accepts constructive criticism
  46. Assists in the orientation of new employees.
  47. Upon receiving the necessary training and/or instruction, performs other duties as required or assigned.

 

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS

Standard medical setting in a correctional facility, which includes daily interfacing with offenders, correctional staff, and health care personnel.  Temperature extremes may be encountered while moving throughout the facility outdoors and indoors in buildings without air conditioning.

 

The following requirements list the minimum to qualify.  An equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted.

TRAVEL: Minimal travel required.

LICENSING: Currently licensed as a Registered Nurse in the state of Illinois

CERTIFICATION: Current CPR certification

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:

  • Three (3) years of professional mental health nursing experience in a correctional setting or in a hospital, clinic, drug/alcohol rehabilitation unit or nursing convalescent home.
  • Prior correctional health care experience.
  • Prior adolescent psychiatric experience.
  • Prior experience with electronic medical record system.

 

EDUCATION: Graduate from an accredited School of Nursing with an Associate or Bachelors’ Degree in Nursing.
