Medical Assistants work under direct and indirect supervision of an RN or LPN.



Interrelates and works effectively with clients, other medical assistants, LPNs, RNs, clerks, correctional officers, and other support staff and managers.

Duties and responsibilities will vary with specific assignments.

  1. Identify basic signs and symptoms of deviations from normal health status.  Provide this information to the nurse and/or physician.
  2. Collect basic subjective and objective date from observations and interviews.  Provide this information to the nurse and/or physician.
  3. Perform V.S. and initial screening on sick call clients consistent with scope of practice.
  4. Provide appropriate first aid and CPR.  Report findings to the nurse and/or physician.
  5. Assist the physician or nurse with procedures and treatments.
  6. Schedule physician, dentist, and nurse sick call appointments.
  7. Clean, package and sterilize instruments.
  8. Fax prescription orders to the pharmacy for new orders and refills.
  9. Receive, inspect and inventory medication orders for accuracy.
  10. Maintain needle, syringe and instrument inventory and record of receipt and issuance.
  11. Inventory and restock first aid kits, supply rooms, etc.
  12. Check expiration dates on medications and supplies.
  13. Perform other duties as assigned.

Completion of an assistive health care personnel training/educational program including but not limited to medical assistant, nurse aide, pharmacy technician.



One-year experience in a position with equivalent responsibilities.  Able to meet competency requirements



Current CPR certification.  Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) certification preferred.

This position may require rotating assignments operating on a 24 hour a day, 7 days a week schedule where employee is subject to both voluntary and mandatory overtime.

Employee may be exposed to a challenging environment, which may include exposure to bloodborne and airborne pathogens and loud noises.



Standard medical setting in a correctional facility, which includes daily interfacing with inmates, correctional staff, and health care personnel.

Temperature extremes may be encountered while moving throughout the facility outdoors and indoors in buildings without air conditioning.
